But something powerful is taking root in South Texas.
The Evolution of Starbase: From Portable to Permanent
Just over four years ago, I toured what was then an emerging SpaceX development near Boca Chica. At the time, the rows of Airstreams and massive storage tanks felt portable—like a project that could pack up and move if the business winds shifted.
Today, that feeling has been replaced by hope. With the proposal to incorporate Starbase as a legal Texas city, SpaceX is signaling a long-term commitment to the Rio Grande Valley.
Why Corporate Roots Matter for Our Youth
In a region where investment often bypasses our schools, SpaceX is planting roots. This matters because:

Closing the Gap: Hispanic Representation in STEM
The presence of SpaceX isn’t just about rockets; it’s about representation. The statistics tell a clear story of why this local presence is vital:

The upcoming vote to incorporate Starbase as a city is a major milestone. While roughly 300 registered voters (mostly SpaceX employees) will cast the ballots, the ripples will be felt across South Texas.
A legalized Starbase could:

Critics have valid concerns regarding corporate power and access to Boca Chica Beach. This stretch of coast is a cultural touchstone for fishing and family gatherings. As development continues, we must ensure state laws regarding beach access are respected while balancing the safety requirements of a world-class launch site.
A New Narrative for South Texas
Yes, Starbase may be a “company town,” but it has the potential to be a community town. The presence of SpaceX adds a powerful voice to the chorus of leaders calling for better workforce development and regional visibility.
We are changing the narrative for our students. Success no longer has to mean leaving the Valley. Their future—in space, in STEM, and in life—can start right here at home.
